Running RH9 with BTYahoo broadband

Hi All,

I am thinking about upgrading from dial-up to a broadband Internet connection. It seems that I will be given a Speed Touch 330 ADSL modem which will still run through a phone-line. It will also use ADSL filters, my question is, will I still be able to use kppp for instance for the initial dial-up connection Has anyone used this service or offer me some advice on it.

Many thanks in advance..

Well I have used DSL before, but not the yahoo . DSL uses something called PPPOE, basically your good ol' PPP over ethernet. Most major distros of linux come with a tool to connect to your DSL modem. Most of them now are USB. You will probably have to specify which one you want. I would go for a non-usb one that uses ethernet. Then you will have to figure out which DSL utilitiy you want to use. I recommend that you just buy a router. You can get a decent router for less than $40 anymore. Linksys is the most popular. It will dial your PPPOE for you and split your internet between several pcs. Not to mention it acts as a natural firewall to protect you from hackers. Thats the difference between dialup and broadband. With broadband your always online, all a hacker needs is time...
