Running Internet at bootup in failsafe or TERMINAL-mode only

I'm a newbie, and I'm wondering....

How can I startup Linux in the terminal-only mode instead of GUI mode and bring up my wireless or network cable Internet connection?

How do I do this?

Thanks!

You can start your computer in console only mode by changing the default runlevel in /etc/inittab from 5 (4 in slack) to 3. I am not sure about your networking though. If its already configured to start at bootup then it will just start regardless of whether you are using a gui or not.
