Angry rtl8139 (8139too.o) in debian

I have a nifty problem with debian. I'm using 3.0r0 and when I try and upgrade my kernel from 2.4.18 to 2.4.20, or even recompile 2.4.18 it looses touch with my nic module. it's kinda neat actually, as I noticed it last night when diff'ing the two dmesg's.... so, any neat and totally cool ideas that pertain to this? I do so love debian, but in slack this doesn't happen.

I know this is probably obvious, but are you making sure to compile support for that module?

Does it work when you modprobe 8139too

what is the error you're getting with the dmesg?
