Routing table query


Hi all,

Briefly

I have a Dlink router/adsl (10.1.1.1/255.0.0.0) modem which is providing DHCP to all but one machine on the network.

The static machine is 10.1.1.2/255.0.0.0. Eventually I'll be forwarding quite a bit of stuff to this machine.

It's running Fedora Core 3 and I have installed apt, but apt hangs with (10.0.0.0) after first connecting line.

route -n shows

Destination Gateway GenMask Flags Metric ref Use Iface
169.254.0.0. 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
10.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
0.0.0.0 10.1.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0

route changes the lastline to
default mygateway1.ar7 0.0.0.0 etc, etc.....

None of the addresses above make much sense to me. And although the network / internet are working ... apt isn't and I'm not entirely happy with weird IPs appearing, nor the mygateway1.ar7 'domian' which I did not set up. Any help, or indications of what is going on, greatly appreciated.

why is your mask 255.0.0.0? Shouldn't it be 255.255.255.0?

Hi debianmike!

it's an A class network address, 255.0.0.0. C Class network addresses use the 255.255.255.0 subnet mask.

yes, i understand that, but do you plan on having 255 subnets? or what ever a class A give's you?

you say 10.1.1.1 is one machine and 10.1.1.2 is another...you are using a class A, but are defining each machine with only 1 octet.

I'm not a master of networking, but that is what I think is wrong...mask it so only the last octet defines the host, not the last 3 octets.
