A hub only allows traffic to be broadcast back and forth in a network. You DSL modem has a single IP address to ditribute (unless other wise noted) so the 2 machines would have to "share" that IP address. Using DSL usually you have P.P.o.E. (Login more or less) to access the internet. Soon as 1 machine logs in the other will go down. Get a ROUTER =) simplifies things and BOTH can use the internet at the same time. Oh and your Linux machine makes a great router if you have 2 network cards in it!

does your DSL modem also act as a router? there may not be enough allocated IP addresses coming from the router thus causing one computer to lose connectivity when it doesn't renew an IP address in time, thus another computer steals its IP.
