Route issues with fedora

Hi guys, i'm having adsl modem. my isp gave me an ip address, but the problem is when i put these ip's manually the machine could not add the default route into the routing table and i can't not ping nor surf.
when i try to add default route i got this error, SIOCADDRT: No such device. The great confusion is that when i select to get ip automatically everything works fine. pls help

Is your ISP providing you with static IP address?

Well he provided me with the static ip yes. Thank you guys, i have noticed the problem. It was the issues of subnetting.Gateway was in different subnet with the ip address. Although this work fine with windows but not with linux.
Thank you again.
