Question Ricoh Ecabinet document retrieval device issues

We have a ricoh ecabinet 1100 that runs some sort of linux as the operating system. The performance we are getting from the box is less than desired so we want to use this appliance for the ocr and .pdf creation. We then want to put the documents it creates on a much faster server and use that box for retrieval.

So the question is how can i connect to this box from a windows 2000 box? I have probed the box and the ports that are open are 21, 25, 80, 111 and 139. Any ideas?

I've been looking into how to access the ecabinet also, so far i've found out that the ecabinet is running freebsd and apache. I also found this "The ecabinet software was developed using the Puerdue Compiler Construction Tool Set (PCCTS)"

hrrmmm....other then that i'm kinda lost

My company is entering its third year of trying to use Ricoh ecabinet. We actually have two units. Our experience has been very poor. I am not sure it is directly attributed to Linux, but poor response time and database corruption are frequent issues. Ricoh has been unable to resolve the issues.

It seems ecabinet is suitable for small business owners with no external user demand. However, ours is a national scope with hundreds of remote users needing access. ecabinet has proven to be unacceptable to suppor this kind of enterprise.

As an 'appliance' direct access is not allowed.

The ecabinet is secured to ensure that users can only access it using the web front end.

Their functionality is good, but they aren't built for speed.

As I understand it Ricoh no longer market them (certainly no longer in the UK). In the UK their primary document management system is Laserfiche - (we actually offer a service to migrate data out of eCabinet).

However I am sure we could tune up an eCabinet for an existing user if their need/usage was clearly defined.

To answer the original question -- I would just schedule a backup to an NFS server, and use that data to serve the documents -- letting the eCabinet do the capture, import, ocr, backup, sync, email stuff that it does so well.

Paul
