Question RH9 and WinXP aren't playing nice!

I'm a newbie to the Linux world and am trying to get a RH9 machine to talk with a WindowsXP machine through a linksys router. Both machines are able to access the internet and I can ping the linux box from the xp box. However, when I try to ping from linux to xp it hangs. The high level goal is to share files and allow the linux box to print on the xp's printer. Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated!

How are you pinging? By name (ping xp) or address (ping 192.168.1.11)? The fact that both machines can surf indicates they each have a valid IP address and default gateway. You may need to put an entry in /etc/hosts on your RH box for your XP box:

192.168.1.11 winxp

Then "ping winxp" will ping the address 192.168.1.11.

You will need to configure Samba on the RH9 machine in order for the machines to share files/printers. RH9 comes with a GUI config tool (System Settings/Server Settings/Samba Server) for setting it up if you're not comfortable editing /etc/samba/smb.conf.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your response. I was pinging via ip address, but have added names to the hosts file. After much hacking, I discovered a button in winxp that allows the os to protect my computer. I deselected that button and it is working. There are some issues with the file system, but more hacking is required before I know what to ask.

Cheers!
