RH9 and DHCPD issues with some clients
Hi,
I just have a quick question and I was wondering if someone can help.
Basically I have a small network and my linux box is running dhcpd, 2 clients get their leases fine ( 1 x 98 and 1 x XP ) though 2 other XP clients don't.
If I check my logs, I can see their discover packets, and I can see the offer going out with the correct details but for some reason I never get an accept back and the clients tell me DHCP server not avaliable. Well in more words than that thanks to MS but thats the gist of the error.
Any suggestions?
I have tried different adapters in the clients and cables and ports on the hub. A few formats of the clients as well to no avail....

have u check that on your client side (XP) the service is not disabled by any chance. Another work aroound is to try getting MAC addr from (XP boxes) and in your DHCP server file bind that MAC addr with IP and see what happens.

oh i see this A LOT !!!! on my job
it's a problem with XP.
do this in XP.
in control panel, go to network connections, on the Local Area Connection Icon, you have to RIGHT click, disable, then RIGHT Click and enable and it will fix it.. you'll see the DHCPACK packet in your logs.
there is no knowledge base on this problem, it's VERY VERY VERY common in XP.

1000 bucks says this works.
[edit] this will happen often, i suggest a very long lease time so that the computer doesnt release the ip for like....days if possible.

I have tried setting an IP outside of the range I am assigning to the network and assigning via mac id. Same thing you see the offer but no accept.
The disable/re-enable of the network connection doesn't work, well I haven't tried but I have re-installed the NIC enough times now that I know the other wont work.
Any more suggestions..

Try using the NIC from working XP box might be that your NIC not working or else give the non working XP a static ip in the same IP/Subnet range and see if u can ping the other boxes to make sure that the NIC r fine. I fthe NIC is fine Iīm pretty suret there is a problem with the client dhcp in XP does not make sense that some M$ boxs get IP and other donīt if none thenu could say that the DHCP.conf was not correctly setup which I think is not the case.
Either way ost the DHCP.conf file.
