6.2....
Huh, maybe the dhcp client in 6.2 sucks. Have you considered trying a newer distro?

Thanks to all for responding.
Referring to my post of 9/1 wherein I state that the standard configuration for RH7.0 works fine, I have been comparing the syslog from 7.0 with the log from 7.1 and noticed something that may or may not be meaningful. In both versions, my NIC shares IRQ10 with the USB ports; however, in v.7.0, the NIC boots first, and in 7.1, the USBs boot first.
How can I determine if the shared IRQ is the problem, and assuming that it is, how then can I:
- get the USBs to use a different IRQ, or
- get the USBs to leave the IRQ alone until after the NIC is up?

Check Your Bios
WindozBytes Ciao!
I have had a similar problem with Redhat 7.1 and my sound card. I had an IRQ conflict because the Bios was set to PNP OS so the system would not allow the card to use the correct IRQ. Check your Bios to see if the PNP OS feature is turned on. I am using an ABIT 7 board for AMD and I haven't had any problems with my sound or NICs under Windows 2000 or linux since the change. Or if this is a PCI card try moving the position of the card from one PCI slot to another that may resolve the conflcit.

WindozeBytes: I hope by this time you have gotten dhcp working with you D-Link router. I only have some minor things to add.
Above it was pointed out DHCP being UDP protocol doesn't authenticate on the source, so its possible for someone to spoof an internal IP in your network through router....while this is true , there are filters on the router you can configure to drop the incoming packets to avoid this. I also think the D-Link router for the price is not worth it. It happen to be the first router i tried to use and I wasnt even able to access the web config. I read up on routers and found good reviews on Netgear, purchased it, love it....if there's any way you can return it still..give it a try.
In my set up (1 box using running RH7.1, the other w2k), I set the network adapter to obtain dhcp automatically with my Netgear router and never have had a problem. So I guess my only suggestion is try a different router :P.

Here’s what I have:
Abit KT7 motherboard using Duron 600 processor
3Com 3C900B-TPO PCI ethernet card
RH7.1
kernel is 2.4.7 ( same problem with 2.4.2 & 2.4.3 )
dhcpcd is the default version shipped with RH7.1
( same problem using the version shipped with RH7.0 )
NIC modules is 3c59x
3Com website indicates this is the correct module, and
lsmod verifies that it is loading correctly
no interrupt conflicts
as verified in /cat/interrupts
plug ‘n’ pray is ( and has always been ) disabled in the BIOS
eth0 interface does not come up; yields the message that it times out waiting for a valid response from the dhcp server.
eth0 interface will come up using a static IP; however, I can’t ping anything but the eth0 address, not even the firewall/router.
System works perfectly with the default installation under RH7.0 and the 2.2.xx kernel.
Is there something that changed from RH7.0 to RH7.1 or from 2.2 to 2.4 that would cause this behavior? Or is it time to visit the bugzilla page at redhat.com?
I’m running out of things to try….

Could be the card.
WindowzBytes -
I had a similar issue with RH 7.1 not recognizing the exact same card. I switched the card with a Dlink 600 and haven't had a problem.

Resolution
I finally have everything working the way it should. The solution was waaaaay too simple, just plugged the patch cable into a different port on the router.... No, really, that's all I did.

Similar problem here, also using @home through linksys router.
However, mine's more wierd!
The Linux box can browse the net, but shows no IP address, and does not show up in the router's DHCP client list!
I tried setting it to a fixed IP, but it's still not pingable (yes, I made the config active, even tried rebooting ala broken-windows.)
I'd like to get it up and running on a fixed IP, but frankly, I can't figure how it's running as is!
