RH 9 Connectivity Problem(s)
 

I have a Winbook laptop with Redhat 9.
It is wireless with a Netgear 401 card.
I have only been able to get it to connect successfully after totally reinstalling my system. This is not going to work
.......
After a fresh install, it will work fine and I stay connected. After I power down and reboot , it is impossible to reconnect. I am unable to activate the eth1.
I am at a loss as to what the problem is.
Any help would be keeping me from a breakdown !!

Have you made sure that PCMICIA services are started? If not '/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start' is the command you need (replacing start w/ status will let you know if its on or not).
This might be the problem...if it is, you could prolly edit this into the boot file to start automatically.

The bootup sequence seems OK.
The PMCIA service is fine and I double check it by looking for the green light on the Netgear 401R and I also check in Services and it all OK. When I try to activate eth1 is where it all breaks down. As a matter of fact, I played with it until the wee hours of the morning this morning and after the 5th or 6th install, it was running fine. I logged into RHN, got may mail ,...... yadda yadda yadda. This morning ....nothing. I am not about to go for a record in installing Red Hat 9. I just can't figure out why eth1 has trouble after a boot. Tres frustrating .... I have to log onto my dang old Windows to get my internet activities done and I am trying my best to ween myself off of Windows ..... any other ideas would be helpful -Emmett

I just got off of Windows and emerged myself back into the fight. The good news is that I did not have to reinstall Red Hat but the bad news is that it took about 6 or 7 reboots. And oddly enough, the configuration never changed....... Hmmmmmmm. I am snowed ..... I gotta believe that this is normal. Agh!!!!

Just outta curiosity, have you tried to shut down all network settings after booting Linux, like stopping eth1 and PCMCIA, then initializing them in order with PCMICA, then eth1 (for some reason i have read several posts where PCMCIA starts AFTER the initialization of the eth ports)?
Second, have you made sure that you have the closest alias possible for your card, or have messed with the type of card in Network settings? I know that it works when you first reinstall, but you might wanna try modprobing your card with a different module, just for giggles.
Beyond this, i am not sure, since i have been toying with linux myself, and can't get LISa working.

Hi daemon,
I have gone into Services, and started/restarted my pcmia and my eth1 sttings until I am blue in the face. I am on Red Hat now ...afraid to log off ..... and I spent about 45 minutes booting / rebooting and going to my adaptor and powering that on and off .... and for no apparent reason , it all clicked and I got back on-line again. Changed nothing...... but I liked your idea about looking at the alias. But it is soooooo strange to me that it works - or not - for no technical reason that I can figure out.......so will keep at it .... there must be some reason for this ...... as much as I hate to say it and I do hate to say it ...but Windows is consistent in connecting. But to be fair, Windows has the direct connection to the Network Adaptor/Router and I am using Linux for the WiFI.
