RH 9 Asus laptop trying to see desktop as Internet Gateway
 

I'm still a newbie - but getting better on the technical side of things.

Got through the RH 9 for Dummies section on networking, have configured my desktop (connected to the internet with an external modem) as 198.162.1.254, have modified sysctl.conf to allow ip forward, and have been able to ping 198.162.1.254 by the laptop (also running RH 9).

If I can ping the desktop with 0% packet loss, why can't I see the internet!!!

Help please.

You have to add iptables rules too on your desktop to use it as a gateway to the internet for other computers. But you are nearly there.

But, how do I do that!!! I can't find where I would edit the iptables, then what I would do when I got there.

I don't want to start diddlying about with iptables at the moment as it's kinda late here and if it don't workfirst time everything ends up compounded, suffice to say search on the forum about ip masquerade, ip NAT or internet sharing and you'll get enough info or hang in here posting your exact set up networks cards etc. and it'll come good.
