RH 7.2 Config to get HTTP via ADSL Modem/Router

Hi.... I'm new to Linux. I have an ADSL connection at home that works well with Windows and I can't quite seem to get it to work with Linux.

I have a D-Link dsl504 which is a ADSL Modem/Router and 4 port switch in one. My pc plugs into one of the ports. In windows 2000/xp, to get web access all I need to do is set the gateway in the network settings to the ip address of the router (192.168.0.1) and then everything works - this is using dhcp to get an ip etc. In Linux, (redhat 7.2 running kde) I can also get dhcp to work and I can "see" the adsl router, but I can't get past it onto the internet. I have tried using "netcongif" to set my IP address manually and this also works, but I can't get out past the router. Can anyone help me? How do I set the gateway? Am I missing anything?

Thanks,

Adrian

Hi, I have RH 7.2 on my desk and RH 7.1 on my routerbox wich is connected to Alcatel ADSL modem.

On my deskbox I have my ISP's nameserver number in
/etc/resolv.conf and /etc/sysconfig/network is:
NETWORKING=yes
# FORWARD_IPV4 removed; see /etc/sysctl.conf
HOSTNAME=dellxs.tanken.hem (my local LAN domain)
GATEWAY=192.168.1.3 (=routerbox)
GATEWAYDEV=eth0

Check your network status with:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network status
you should get reply like:
Configured devices:
lo eth0 irlan0 ppp0 (irlan0 ppp0 are not needed)
Currently active devices:
eth0 lo (this is needed)

If not then, you have to start/restart your network with
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start/restart

I think that's all. Have fun!

hei... hvordan gaar det ?

where you have your hostname = dellxs.tanken.hem, do you have any idea what I should have if anything? I'm not running a domain or anything like that, so do you think I need to specify a hostname?

takk :)

Hej!

Tack för den skandinaviska hälsningen!

I don't think HOSTNAME is mandatory.
