RH 7.1 - Intel Pro/100+ Management Adapter
Hi Folks,
I have a Compaq Deskpro EN. It's a PIII/800. It has an Intel Pro/100+ Management Adapter.
Things work fine when I install RH 7.0, but under 7.1 the only thing I can ping is my own interface. Instead of using the eepro100.o I've also tried the e100.o driver from Intel. No luck with either driver.
Thought it might be the firewall, so installed with no firewall and went so far as to do a "chkconfig --level 2345 ipchains off", but still no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. using the eepro100.o, any unusual startup messages for DHCP, PCI or eth0 (also dmesg/messages)?
2. what does ifconfig eth0 say? (correct ip, netmask)
3. default route to gateway added?
4. dns addresses in resolv.conf correct?

Hi unSpawn,
Thanks for the reply. In answer to your questions:
1. /var/log/messages shows eth0 starting fine.
2. ifconfig eth0 looks good appears to have correct IP netmask etc. , but I do not see any receive packets. I see transmit, but not receive.
3. Default gateway appears correct in Network Configurator. Is there somewhere else I should look, just to be paranoid?
4. DNS info is correct in /etc/resolve.conf, but doesn't do any good as I can not ping anything except my own interface.

Make sure your loopback device (lo) is also in place and functioning. Do
Code:
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 up
and then try to ping 127.0.0.1.

Hi
I had a similar sort of problem, and ended up destroying / reinstalling the system.
Still didn't work.
CHECK THE CABLE!

Hi DMR,
Thanks for the reply. lo was already up and is pingable. I can also ping my own IP (in this case 134.50.40.22), but I can not ping anything other machine only my local eth0 and lo interfaces.

Hi drjimstuckinwin,
Thanks for the reply. The cable is good as is the card. The interesting thing is that everything is fine under RH 7.0. It first would not work on a clean install of 7.1, so after trying several things and chanting a few not so magic words I decided to try 7.0 and everything was fine. I then thought I would be sneaky and do an upgrade to 7.1. After the upgrade it stopped working again. It's definately a strange problem. I'm sure that once it is solved it will turn out to be something silly, but I'm quickly running out of ideas.

Have you got the right tcp/ip ipx etc settings at kernel level. Maybe your 7.1 doesn't speak tcp????
