Restricting Bandwith

I have 8 computers connected on a LAN using a adsl modem router and i want to be able to restrict the bandwidth of certain computers but the router doesn't support this.
I have heard of flavours of Linux that can act as a router or suchlike.
Is it possible, using an old computer i have (p3 800mhz) to install linux on this and restrict the bandwidth of users by ip or mac address?
If so, what software would i need? I would like to put the computer between the router and the phone line as i don't want to have to buy lots of networking cards and use the computer as a stand alone router.
Many thanks

your best plan of action is to look at the cbq or htb scripts, which are *slightly* higher level scripted interfaces to the tc application. there's is also a cbq gui in gtk... have a google for that if you're after a pretty interface.

Personally i would suggest using ipcop as a linux firewall router on any old low-end box, and add the cbq stuff manually (it's actually pretty easy...). with a real firewall like ipcop it'll do all the NAT stuff for you instantly, and be another fun toy too.

Since IPCOP1.4 traffic shaping is integrated to IPCOP

Thanks for the quick reply.
I've had a look at the ipcop website and it seems good although i'm not sure if i can use it with my netgear adsl modem/router. As far as I can see, the ipcop box would sit in betwee the router and modem, but mine is rolled into one. Can I still use it?
Thanks again
