resolv.conf not holding saved values

In KDE, I add things in the DNS and Search Domain and apply the changes.
In a terminal window, I do a more /etc/resolv.conf to verify the changes are there.
Then when I restart and again do more /etc/resolv.conf, the changes are gone. I guess this is because I have set to dhcp. The difficulty is that I am somewhere in between dhcp and static ip because my network is setup with a NAT. I have a static IP, but that is known only to the outside world. The machines on the inside are 192.168.0.x.

What do I do?

Running Debian Etch, KDE 3.5.5

I believe the DHCP process is retrieving the DNS addresses form your router and overwriting the /etc/resolv.conf file. You would have to look at the router configuration to see if you can turn it off.

Is there some reason you do not want to use the DNS addresses from your router?

If it is to get to local machines on your network, you can add entries in the /etc/hosts file for local machines. That shouldn't be affected by DHCP.

I use static addresses on my network. What I did was set up 5 addresses on my home lan for the DHCP server to dish out for the laptops that come and go. For the desktops that stay I assign a static IP address in the sub-net range outside the 5 addresses the router hands out. Works fine, I have the benefit of static on desktops, and DHCP on the lappys.

Angry

yeh , I am also facing the same problem. I am using the OpenSUSE 10.1 and I use ADSL to connect to the internet.

The default setting makes browsing too slow , so i disabled the IPv6
.

This may be caused by incorrect DNS settings (according to forum posts) . The DNS server IP provided by my ISP isn't stored by YAST's ADSL option. So I manually edited the resolv.conf file to add my provided values . But the problem is that while connecting through KInternet/CInternet tool the primary DNS becomes something dynamically set IP (in the range 221.25.xx.xx) . But the provided IP is in the range 61.12.xx.xx .

Even when i try to manually edit the file while i am connected , the files get again overwritten in the next dial-up.

even pinging the google.com server takes atleast 2 min to commence .
Most of the time my browser stuck while "Looking for abcdxxx.com..." , but no progress.

Hmph... I have chosen to have a static ip, and resolv.conf is still being written over!
