dhcp is how you get the ip... no dhcp = no internet.

Even if i have my modem switched off while DHCPDISCOVER is running, it says something like no eth0 connection found, it still takes its time with something like this on startup ....

DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 7
DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 19
DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 20
DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 14
No DHCPOFFERS received.

the net still works. when i switch the modem on.

It takes a lot of time, like 30 se3cs and pisses me off

As you are having a DSL modem why don't you configure your Internet using the command line utility "adsl-setup". "adsl-setup" explicitly asks whether you want to connect to internet during booting, just specify "no"

Once the machine starts use "adsl-start" to start the internet and if you want to disconnect use "adsl-stop"

You could always stop your network card from being activated at boot time. Alternatively, assign the network card a static private ip address. But either way you will still need to run dhclient manually when you want to connect to the internet thus running into "DHCPDISCOVER thingy" again.
