Remotely Logging into my home PC via Linux/Unix
I have posted on a Vista forum also...hopefully i can take the twos ideas and put them together.
I would like to connect to my home PC from my Unix/Linux machine. By what process would I do this? rlogin, ssh, telnet? something I'm not aware of? Also, I know this is out of Linux users league, however, anything I may have to do with my Vista machine (other than opening the appropriate port) you can think of? This is soo easy with Linux, why so hard PC, why? |
what do you want to do on your home pc? i'm just learning some of this stuff myself, but i'm you can use ssh to make a connection. but are you wanting to access files? you would need you configure Samba for file sharing. thats another topic. if you want to view your home pc screen (don't know why you'd need to) you could VNC through a ssh tunnel. don't ask me how to do it. i've only been studying this stuff for a couple weeks. but i've been reading about whats possible.

Ha, 2 weeks, and I find something after I post.
rdesktop The linux command to connect via a terminal shell to the windows file system. Users must first enable remote desktop on their PC and add users to the list to allow logins. I hope this article helps others. However this is only for visual. |
I want to be able to treat my PC as I would my Unix computer. I want to be able to scp files between the two. I want ssh type access to it. I want text based login's, like a remote command prompt of some sort.

Then you should run Linux or Unix on your PC.

I don't have any experience with it, and I'm honestly not sure how extensive it is, but Cygwin may allow something close to what you're looking for. From the website:

I already have a Unux comp (my FreeBSD machine) No reason to dual boot my PC. Quote:
Thanks |
Don't know a whole lot about Vista, but I know there are a couple of compatibility tools available. Could you use Cygwin in an XP compatibility layer?
|
Have you seen winexe? I believe it's a port of psexec.
Never used it, but see what you can find on the net. |
I know this is old but using Winxp, i use Putty to connect to my home Debian computer, ssh would be running as the host. I'm not sure if Putty works with Vista but I assume it should.

Got cygwin to work! My apologies for not posting this sooner.
