Remote X to Ubuntu - keyboard goes nuts...

I have this problem when using Exceed for instance in order to connect to my Ubuntu machine. The login window comes up and I can login ok - keyboard works ok. Ubuntu starts and desktop comes up. I start terminal and keyboard layout is completely wrong.

I noticed that it is not only exceed it is also when using other means for remote X session. So what can I do in order to resolve this problem
I also get some messages about gnome keyboard settings differing from x settings. (It mentions german pc105 vs. us default or so, but the problems I get are far beyound differences between us keyboard vs. german keyboard)

I noticed some people having similar problems but I haven't found a solution. This is also definitely on Ubuntu since another machine that runs Centos can be accessed with none of these problems - I just can't figure which config files to compare...
