Ok. I'm new to this Linux stuff, so to prevent possible frustrated impact between my head and a certain PC can someone please help!!!
I've install SuSE 9.0 on a duel boot machine and I would like to be able to access the internet and the other ten local Windows machines. With the gateway left blank I can see the local network (10.0.0.0 : 255.255.255.0) using samba but I can't access the internet using the lan/modem/router
(Netgear RM356) . If I set the gateway to the modems i.p. 10.0.0.10 I can access the internet but I lose the local SMB shares (the directory's show up after a very long wait, but the files can't be accessed). I think this is a routing problem, I've disabled the firewall so it can't be that.
This is the routing info
Dest. - Gateway - Genmask - Flags
10.0.0.0 - 0.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.0 - u
127.0.0.0 - 0.0.0.0 - 255.0.0.0 - u
0.0.0.0 - 10.0.0.0 - 0.0.0.0 - ug

I don't know the netgear you're using, but does it
know that it's a router, too? Or is supposed to be
a hub/switch in terms of the machines attached to
it?
The RM356 is a 56K V90 modem built into a 10 meg hub. The modem part has an i.p. address, and firewall ect. But I have been running it from windows for years with no problem. As the Linux machine also boots to windows with the same i.p. the problem can't be the modem's firewall. Windows takes the modem's i.p. as a gateway and works every time. I think SuSE is routing packets to the modem that should be going to the internal lan. The delay problems show up even when the modem is turned off.
I don't use the modem's hub. All the devices on the local network are connected to a netgear switch, this allows me to run the modem on a timer to prevent it accidently going online at the wrong time of day.
With the modems I.P. set in linux as the gateway and the i.s.p.'s DNS addresses set under host lookup, I can get the internet but not the local lan, with either of these cleared I can get the local lan but not the internet.
Am I doing something silly with the routing setup?
