remote ip retrieval

Hi everyone...

I'm posting to hear some good suggestions about a way of retrieving an IP address of a computer we have at home and which is always connected to the internet but with a dynamic IP...

For instance a plugin for GAIM which retrieves it's IP address when someone opens a chat would be useful... unfortunately the last plugin for this is very old now and doesn't compile on my slackware...

Any other suggestion (apart from dyndns or buying a static IP address)

thanks

Hi,

use a free dynamic DNS service, like dyndns.org
You can register a hostname there, which will always resolve to your IP address
(with the help of a small program you have to install on the computer, and sends the new IP to the dyndns server when it changes)

yes that's the easiest way and the most expen$ive... but I was looking for something clever... for instance

When someone joins an IRC channel, you are greeted with their JOIN message. Which looks
something like:

* Joins: ANDRE (andre@pD91C6FC2.dip.t-business.it)

andre is his nickname. andre@ is what is called an 'ident'. pD91C6FC2.dip.t-business.it is
known as his 'hostmask'. In your status window, type

/whois andre

This will give you his hostmask pD91C6FC2.dip.t-business.it . Then type

/dns pD91C6FC2.dip.t-business.it.

this will give

* Dns resolving pD91C6FC2.dip.t-business.it
-
* Dns resolvedpD91C6FC2.dip.t-business.it to 256.12.165.10

that's his IP address, unfortunately most IRC channels ban this... does anybody know one which works...?
more suggestions???

By the way.... joining an irc channel to retrieve a IP was ok but you need to be operator in that channel...
If I create a #channel in irc I become operator but when I join the channel from another computer I'm no more an operator so I can't issue /whois on the ident of my computer always connected to the internet....

That looked almost good but still doesnt each the goal... please some more suggestion... It's not possible that my computer is lost in cyberspace!!!!

Oh Yes there's another way other than registering a domain and a dynamic dns to cach your box in the internet.... unfortunately I expected more contribution but finaly I found on my own how with a Perl script I can retrieve my box running a small server for that...

I'm embedding the perl script in my homepage http://newdata.atspace.com

I'm near to closing this thread ;-)

DynDNS's Dynamic DNS services are free. There are many other sites that offer free dynamic DNS services. I use DynDNS on one of my servers. And there are more than a dozen update clients that work with it. I use ddclient, which runs as a daemon so I don't have to manually run it, is smart so it updates only when it changes, and it has features like the ability to obtain the IP from routers or the web.
