Remote desktop SuSE 8.2 -> Windows Server 2003
 

Hi,

This has been annoying me for a few days now, hopefully someone will be able to shed some light.. I've got one box running Windows Server 2003, with the built in RDP server running, which I've successfully connected to before using XP Pro. Having recently installed SuSE on another machine, I want to be able to get a remote desktop from there, so firstly I tried SuSE's built in remote desktop connection program, as I noticed it says "All VNC and RDP compatible servers will be supported" - typing into the window 192.168.0.1:3389 (the local IP of the Server 2k3 machine, and I believe the default port Windows uses for RDP). A progress bar appears, gets about half way, pauses for a while, and then I get the error "Connection Failed. The server does not accept new connections".

That not having worked, I had a look about and saw people had achieved what I wanted to do using rdesktop, so I gave that a go, though with this I get the error "Less than 8 bpp not currently supported". I assume this is referring to the colour depth of the Linux machine, which is definately higher than 8 bpp, so I'm slightly confused. Its likely I'm doing something stupid here, has anyone got any suggestions, or success stories of using the built in SuSE remote desktop to connect to a Windows Server?

No RDP for me, but I'll try to help...

I have Fedora with KDE 3.3. In the Connection pop-up for Remote Desktop Connection, there's an Example button that says it should be like "rdp:/megan". I'm sure IP would work fine instead of hostname, but you might really need the protocol before it.

I have a Win 2000 server at work... It doesn't have RDP, so I use TightVNC on it instead.

Hm.. Tried putting rdp:/ before the IP (also tried hostname), had odd results, the window just dissapeared :-). I did use TightVNC for a bit - it worked, though it was dodgy, the display kept going funny, especially when doing things like browsing webpage (although this isnt really required as I can do this from the Linux machine anyway) - the main problem is that I wanted the Windows Server 2k3 machine to be used at the same time as from the Linux machine, and TightVNC seems to simply let you control the machine as is, i.e. control whatever is showing on that PC.
rdesktop seems to be the best option for what I want to do, I just cant get it working.. I'm sure other people have done this.
