remote controlling linux pc

Hi all!
I would like to remotely control my desktop from my laptop while I am away. Simply because my desktop has a cable connenction to the internet and while away I can only dial-up. I know remote administration is possible but not how it is possible.

My desktop is behind a router and firewall. I assume I will have to open various ports to allow control, but thats about it. Also because my desktop gets its IP address from the router I will have to go through that.

Thanx in advance.

If you are fond of the command line and know your way around, use SSH and open the port 22 or any other, and putt SSHd to listen on that port.

If you want a GUI connection to your desktop computer, use VNC server and client to do the task. Finding solutions to both of these shouldn't be so hard.
