Refused Network Connection

Hi all,

I'm a newbie and would appreciate help on a networking problem.

Two PCs loaded with RH8 both load eth0 devices ok and when I ping from either end, both pcs are seen. I can rlogin from one end, but not the other !!

I basically need to copy files off one PC to to other but on using rcp i get ...

# rcp -r hotech:/home/hotel/ .
# connection refused

Done ...
IP addresses unique
hosts edited
hosts.allow edited
telnet activated

Help - Please !!

Thanks
Subh

Try this:
Code:
rcp -r hotech remote_user@remote_host:/home/hotel/

Wow Thanks for the reply !!

I have tried rcp -r hotech pos@hotech:/home/hotel but no joy !

The fact that I have the two discs installed as hostname = hotech doesn't cause a problem - does it ? I have tried to change the hostname on one disc but still can't copy over files !!!

I'm wondering if it might be the onboard Network Card on PC 2 - possible ???

If I could get a checklist of things to check it would help and probably help me explain the problem in more detail !

Anymore help - appreciated !

Thanks
Subh

Hi,

I clearly misunderstood your command there. I thought "hotech" was the name of the directory you were trying to copy over. Here is the syntax of the command:
Code:
rcp -r directory_to_copy remote_user@remote_host:/home/hotel/
I'm not exactly clear on what you mean by having "the two discs installed as hostname = hotech", but if you mean that both PCs have the hostname "hotech", yes, that would cause a problem. How is the local computer supposed to know that "hotech" means the remote computer instead of itself?

Since rcp uses rsh authentication, make sure the user you specify has the proper permissions to open a remote shell.

Finally, since telnet is not secure, give some thought to using scp instead, as it relies on ssh instead of rsh.

Thanks for the very informative suggestions.

Yes I do have two Pcs with each having the same hostname - silly i know and i wont do it again !!!

I've basically played around with the hostname of one box and trick the services to get the files i needed.

I'm a bit worried about screwing the system by making permanent changes to the hostname on these disks - unless you think there's a safe way to do this ???

Anyway - thanks again !

That's not hard.

Issue the command
Code:
hostname the.new.hostname
and change the hostname value in /etc/sysconfig/network.
