redhat win2k network woes
 

solution that i thought i should post- if details are lacking in my post success haste please post a reply..

after weeks of fun getting samba working between my win2k laptop and redhat
9.1 box- problem was solved by setting up a new smb.conf which i based on
a sample *.conf published on this website. thanks to all the people who
posted samba stuff here.
i've now moved onto internet connection sharing. yes, i know, i'm a glutton
for punishment. i have read many postings on this subject on this site already.
my aim is to get linux box to connect to internet (html browsing in
Mozilla) via shared out dialup on laptop. laptop and linux box are
connected via X over cable.
my compaq armada 1700 is using a xircom modem for dialup net connection.
tried vsocks proxy server on laptop - works with my other win2k pc. no joy
with linux - mozilla was configured with proxy settings on correct socks
port. suspect vsocks will not work with linux. connection refused message
in mozilla.
next tried direct connection in mozilla. i've enabled ICS on win2k server
laptop. i know ICS is not so good with linux.

(i have also tried putting isp assigned dns manually in here)

(isp assign modem ip's via DHCP)


when laptop is connected to isp, i try to ping the isp dns server -
destination unreachable.
firewalls on each pc are disabled.
other users have got linux working with my isp: iprimus.com.au.
removed vsocks(heap of lard) from win2k sys, set dhcp for dialup in netconfig in linux redhat and rebooted all.... problem fixed! can browse via moz on redhat box.
