Redhat linux 9 determining ip for eth0...Failed

Sorry I know this question has probably been asked several times already but I've tried the suggestions and couldnt get anywhere.I have done a dual boot running win xp and Redhat linux 9.The internet for some reason only seems to be working with windows when I boot linux I get the message determining ip for eth0...failed.I tried to activate the ethernet card manually but I still got the same error message.I've tried taking out the card booting linux and taking out the configuration for the card and putting back on letting linux recognize it and configured it but still cant get the internet to work.If any can suggest anything or know a url about this I would greatly appreciate it thanks.
