I just got SBC DSL. It came with a Modem (no router). It works with PPPoE (tech support says). I got my windows 98 system running with it OK. Now I am trying to get my Redhat 8 system to work with DSL. I don't have a home network. For now I just disconnect the ethernet cable from the Windows machine, and plug it into the linux machine. The ethernet device does show that it is activated. I use the internet config wizard, and select the DSL option. It tries to activate, takes a long time, then actually shows that it is activated. About 10 sec. later it deactivates. I got DNS settings from SBC (didn't help). For username I don't include the entire @sbcglobal.net. I will try that. Any other suggestions?
I take it you had software to install with the modem?
This is the problem, they don't make drivers for linux.
If you got a little cash...
I'd suggest buying a ADSL modem/router.
Will work with anything, can plug more than one machine in,
nice standalone hardware plus firewall and routing.
worth the money and not expensive now.
Will work with any provider, any OS, just plug in.
Billy,
Thanks for the suggestion about getting a router. Yes, that is what I have been thinking of doing. But I believe that the redhat 8 does have drivers and should be able to configure. SBC tech support has not been helpful. If I can't get it to work directly, I will get a router, since I have two machines anyway (Windows 98 and linux).
Got the DSL connection to work. I wasn't using the full user-name (including @sbcglobal.net). I was also playing around with some of the other parameters with the internet config wizard. After I restarted computer, it was working. Now I have to decide about getting a router/ with firewall so I have both linux and windows systems going. Anyone have a suggestion for this novice?
