I've been looking at the posts on this site, but I'm still having trouble getting telnet to work on my brand new installation of Redhat Linux 7.1.

I have edited my services file and made sure that telnet is not commented out.

I have edited my telnet file in etc/xinetd.d to take off the refuse directive.

I have edited etc/sysconfig/ipchains to make sure that the telnet ports are not REJECTed and that the ALLOW lines are not commented.

I'm wondering if telnet is even running in the first place. I cannot telnet from the linux box into itself OR from a remote machine into the linux box. This is all on an internal Windows 2000 network and all the machines have internal IP addresses (eg. 10.0.x.x).

How can I find out for sure if telnet is even running? I'm a brand newbie and therefore could use all the "handholding" through this that anyone can muster.

Try (as root) chkconfig --list

this will tell you what services you have running, and what runlevel they are on.

If Telnet is off (it should be listed close to the bottom), type:

chkconfig telnet on

That should turn it on (and will start up each boot session)
