Red Hat 8/9 NIS Authentication failing
Hi-
I'm having a problem setting up my red hat 9 computer lab to authenticate using NIS from a red hat 8 server. The server is brand new and came preinstalled with red hat 8 from Dell. I have followed the howto's to set it up as an NIS server. When I try to log into the GUI on a client, I get invalid username / password. I can telnet, ftp, access samba shares, and access web pages on the server just fine. Authentication just doesnt work. I have run "service iptables stop" on both client and server. I set up the domaimname properly on both client and server. When I do a "ypcat passwd.byname" I get nothing. In all my makes and service starts I have not gotten ANY errors. Any ideas what I could be missing? Thanks for any help! BTW-the reason I'm trying to set up NIS is because I beat my head against the wall trying to use Samba already and I get the same login error with that. the Samba log files on the server seem to indicate successful authentication, but the client still says "invalid username / password"! |
Did you look at /etc/nsswitch.conf and make sure that 'passwd: files nis' and 'shadow: files nis', etc? How about 'getent passwd'?

Thanks for the response, bentz. I finally got it working after I went onto the server and restarted a bunch of services. I noticed that ypmap wasnt started and I think that may have done the trick. Anyway, I'm up and running now... sort of. I'm going to start a new thread with a more appropriate subject for my new problem.
