I am fairly new to Linux, and am about to embark on the task of getting a mail server up and running for our internal network. I have had courier/postfix recommended to me as a good product.
My question is this: Because our broadband connection is unreliable at times, I'd rather not turn my local server into a "true" mail server; rather, I'd like to run a local imap server so that I can keep mail in synch between my laptop, PDA, and desktop, and have that imap server pull down mail from a POP3 server hosted by my ISP. I have been able to do this with hMailserver on Windows XP.
Is this functionality included as part of Courier, or as an extension or plug-in? And eos anyone have a link to a getting started guide or howto for getting courier/postfix up and running on ubuntu server edition? Or recommendations for any other mail server solutions with this functionality?
Courier really doesn't matter for doing this. It'll function fine as an IMAP server for you to access, but what you're looking at is setting up a mail client to fetch your mail from your ISP and then deliver it to a local user. I imagine there are some Postfix docs on this.
