If you want to learn about them, you need books/manuals. Linux already COMES with SNMP software...both server and client pieces. The SNMP daemon is probably already installed and just needs to be configured. The SNMP client piece is as simple as snmpwalk, which is part of the net-snmp tool suite.

If you tried a brief Google search for "linux snmp software", you'd find lots.

Thanks and yes, you are right. I found some, I figured out that I should learn about MIBs too, they are pretty hard to understand for me, but I am getting it. I personally think net-snmp is a complete suite with complete manual. I'd love to implement it but unfortunately I don't have the infrastructure to do it, just bunch of virtual machines, independent and impossible to run them together, coz I don't have enough memory... See what I can do, almost impossible to learn only by reading

Again, SNMP comes WITH pretty much EVERY distro of Linux, and it can easily be installed if you don't already have it. And the net-snmp tools work on any Linux machine too, virtual or not.

And yes, you need more than reading to do it...YOU actually need to DO it. So, go find the instructions on how to install/configure SNMP and its related tools on Linux, read them, and follow them. From there, you will have a WORKING SNMP environment to do something with.

I have it now, both manager and agent on one system. I should practice it, I am not sure how to find my OIDs, but this is pretty nice, explaining what's going on in a MIB:

http://www.dpstele.com/pdfs/white_pa...e_snmp_mib.pdf

I think I should have a MIB browser, I am on mint15 right now and installed tkmib, it doesn't work, not sure why... I should look for other MIB browsers to be able to drag OIDs out of it, let me know f you know something. Thanks

Once you learn your way around the MIBs, you won't need an MIB "browser", YES, you should 'practice' it.

Find OIDs = snmpwalk
OIDs to textual content = snmptranslate
snmpd.conf

2nd for snmpb as mentioned above. Excellent package for tinkering around with SNMP.

My recommendation - Observium - without a doubt the slickest open source SNMP platform I have come across.

It's all very well learning about cli tools, and you should as they are excellent for understanding the mechanics of SNMP, but corporations don't use cli tools, they use guis. SO you need both.

You are right, and they have no idea about OIDs and how they work, and honestly, it is too hard to work on them on CLI, I mean they are many of them, and imaggin dealing with a MIB in vi! I have been reading that SNMP can be used by some NMS, I should look into that too...

PS: I found this one usefull too: https://www.box.net/shared/85pzzri3ggdmgrtkcgzn

I don't know about that. I have definitely found uses for cli tools when diagnosing agents, and NMSs when they are not behaving, so do learn to use them, I just don't agree that you can do without GUIs.
