reading kernel ip tables in red hat linux 2.6

I am doing virtual router project in red hat linux kernel 2.6.
For doing static routing , I need to construct an ip routing table.
I don't know where to find the kernel ip routing and forwarding table.
( I need it because instead of building a new table, i can use the default so that setting routes is easy by predefined commands( e.g . route ) which changes the ip table. )
Any answers please reply quickly.

Did you try looking in /proc/net (e.g., /proc/net/route)?
