Read Just Linux Samba guide but cant ping slack to win98
 

Hi everyone :)

I read the Just Linux Samba guide but cant even manage to ping from my slackware 9.1 box to my other computer which has win98.

I had slackware 9.1 on both machines before and I had it all working fine with masquerading and NFS file sharing... I decided to put win98 (to learn how Samba works!) on my older machine and now I cant even ping it. I have made sure that log onto NT Domain is disabled and Wins is not enabled, I have specified the IP address/subnet mask of the win98 machine.

I have setup my /etc/hosts file on my linux computer.... there arn´t any computers in hosts.deny

Any ideas what I might be missing

If you can't ping, it's not a samba problem, it's lower level. here're some tips:

1) is win98 nic card correcly setup? look for it in right clk on my computer->properties->hardware or something similar. You should see your network card there
2) are the two pc on the same network? the easiest thing would be giving win98 the same ip that pc had under slack. This would exclude a firewalling problem
3) try pinging from win98 to slack (yes, dos too has a ping utility)

I installed the driver that came with my network card... although it didnt like the win98 driver and I had to choose the one for win95

Yeah they both have the mask 255.255.255.0, my slack pc is 192.168.0.1 and the win98 is 192.168.0.2 (As they were in Slack before)

Yeah I tried pinging from both machines... both machines and ping themselves but not each other... is that a sign that the network card is setup ok in the windows machine??

i'm not sure, i think win pings itself via a sort of loopback...
1) I supposed you already checked all your cable connections... if you have a hub, check lights are on...
2) if you still have slack on the second pc, try with it if it works as usual. If you don't have it anymore, maybe on the cd there's a rescue system to ping from...
3) check both cards are set up to the same speed and duplex mode. Under linux use mii-tools

i just skimmed this thread but if the cards are configured and it isnt a physical problem could it be a firewall issue or one of the machines?

I thought that was only on the loopback ip 127.0.0.1 (or somthing like that)

Yep their are all fine, havent touched them since I had slack on both machines.

Yeah before It was automatically setup both cards are 100mbs full duplex and the switch is too. I am not sure about this mii-tools thing though ???

I am going to try your idea of booting from the slack disk and pinging... although I am completely sure all my connections are fine.

GraemeK Maby your right?? I dont have any firewall on the win98 machine but there is one on the slackbox.... although its setup to allow access to it from the 192.168.0.2 (which is now the win98 machine as was before slack 9.1)

What do you think?

My Slackware computer is dual booting so I booted it into xp and managed to get it to network with my 98 computer. So my cables and everything are definitly ok :(

any more ideas?

after I got it going my win xp I was able to reboot and ping from the win98 machine to linux... Strange I don´t know what it is exactly it changed that made it work.

Anyway I got it working :) with samba for file sharing only got one question now and that is how do I share internet... but I think I will post another thead for that.

you'll either need a router or a proxy...

just set up the main machine as a proxy. easiest unless your set on a proper network setup.

You don't have a firewall problem, or you won't be able to ping under slack, too. AFAIK, win98 comes with no firewalling, at least as default.

Here's what i think: despite being identical, your cards are configured differently by the two os.
So under linux, you should run /sbin/mii-tool (no params), while on win I actually don't know, you'll probably find it under network preferences or network adapter properties.
You should check if they are both working at same speed and same duplex mode (HD or FD). If not you have found the problem

some firewall setups will block pings also but i agree that it probably isnt this...

unless you have zonealarm or similar on the win 98 pc.

again, check all connections and settings. i very much doubt its a duplex problem. i've never touched a thing on linux like that. have you turned off iptables to be sure, also?

um.....once your sure thats been done i'd try to ping the loopback, 127.0.0.1 just to make sure you can ping your self and confirm the cards working...

Thanks for the input guys! I got it working I think it was somthing to the connections settings in the TCP/IP setup on the 98 machine... I am just wondering I don´t really undestand much about masquerading but I installed a script with a firewall and IP masqurading it worked sweet for my two computers with slack and is setup to forward internet to 192.168.0.x

Will this still work for the 98 machine??? Any more info that you need just ask
