Please forgive my apparent thickheadedness - I have researched endlessly before asking. I am not a COMPLETE newbie but I am totally dumbfounded by this problem
Had alot of problems connecting my linux box to NTL. I have tried editing the /etc/sysconfig/network file and ifcfg-eth files manually, I've tried using netconf and the automatic configuration during install, I just want to check what I'm putting in in case I'm making a stupid mistake (far from unheard of)
Most of this information seems trivial but please humour me
1. NTL broadband IS cable modem
2. IP address is assigned by DHCP
3. Auto config and netconf dont ask for DHCP IPaddress - do I
have to put this in /sysconfig/network?
4. Connect to modem with straight through cable
5. DO I HAVE TO REGISTER A NEW NIC CARD? I have heard that I might have to contact NTL to register a new MAC address?
Thanks for your help, if I could I'd kiss you xxxxxxxxxxxxx
you need to register online via your cable modem but other than that absolutley everything should be automatic.. well non-existant really. my setup just says:
i don't see your reasoning in number 3... there is no where to put the dhcp address as it's dhcp and thus you don't put it anywhere, as your dhcp client does all of that for you.
Problem is- it has already been registered to another NIC. I will have to phone them up to change this, wont I? Or is it possible to do this on-line by going to the autoreg page? (I'd rather do that than wait an hour on the phone)
I had this problem with NTL - the MAC address registration happens automatically when your modem is assigned another IP address.
Turn everything off, plug everything in then on the network, then boot it all up - if there is a reset button on your modem press it.
This should reset your modem and get it to find another IP (it may happen to find the same IP, this should still work) - it will then communicate your new MAC address to NTL and it should register fine - if there is a problem ring NTL they can connect to the modem and reset it manually from the ISP side.
Hope this helps - when you change machines you will normally have this problem - it is NTL's safe guard to try to stop you connecting a network or machines to the modem - shame they dont understand eh!
CHanged the MAC address of the NIC using ifconfig and it all works fine now. Not checked for reset button on modem - that could be handy, but its working now so I'll leave it be
