Quick BIND question

If I have a BIND namesever running with zone files for only localhost and root server can a client use that nameserver for resolution. My laptop won't use the nameserver and I was wondering if I needed another zone file.

You will need a "." zone for your "root.hints"

Then there is a few things that you can test...

1) Make sure that you're firewall (on the router and on the server) has port 53 open (UDP and TCP).

2) Make sure that "allow query" is set up for your local network in the named.conf file.

3) tail -f /var/log/messages then try again and see what is being logged.

Everything looks ok in all those respects. The server itself will resolve it's own queries just fine. The local network is set for allow query and /var/log/messages logs no errors. I'm trying to get my laptop running Vista to use the server and it will not.
