Question questions about connecting my Linux gateway/firewall directly to modem

So I have a Debian 5 Linux Gateway/Firewall that I've been configuring and I have it all working well. Currently it is connecting to the internet through a typical Linksys router, but I would now like to connect it directly to my cable modem... I just tried this but it could not acquire an ip address from my ISP.

The entry for my public network device in the interfaces file is this:
Code:
auto eth0
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
Either I need more information in my interfaces file, or perhaps I need a cat5 crossover cable? I am not 100% sure.

thanks for any help

Power cycle cable modem

My ISP (Cox) requires the cable modem to be power cycled to change connected devices, i. e. different routers or PCs. Have you done that?

It looks like I did need to reboot my modem. However, I am now having different connectivity problems... I will start a new thread for the sake maximizing help for it.
