Question about configuring a Linux Internet gateway

A colleague of mine asked me to pose this question to you Linux networking gurus out there... :)

Quote:

I want to run a box installed with Red Hat 8.0 or 9.0 using the 2.4 kernel running with 2 NICs on the same network. One NIC will be connected to a internet connection exclusively and the other NIC will be connected to a network segment running with a FQ class C network address range.

The box will need to allow traffic to flow between the two NICs with specific ports and protocols restricted and allowed access through the box. This network would host a mail server, web servers, and a few other misc. networks services.

What would be the easiest and most effective way to do this using the Linux version and kernel specified. This box would be a temporary firewall until our company switches from one data line to this data line that I want to use this linux on. Once we have everything shifted over, I can reconfigure the existing firewall applicance that I have on the old data line to the new data line.
Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Peace...
