qmail and smtp


I am currently administering a mail server, which was already setup. Why does it log:
deferral:Sorry I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection.
when i monitor maillog.

gernally it means that no connection can be made to the SMTP port on the machine you are trying to send mail to. Check your logs and find out what the address of the machine is that is generating this error. Once you have this try to connect to this machine by hand, in other words try to telnet to the address you find to port 25. If you get a failed connection them you know that this machine is down.
