Qemu port forwarding not connecting from host to guest

I'm having difficulting with connecting from a host to a qemu guest machine. All my forward connections seem to be forwarded through to the host istead not the guest with these settings:

Code:
qemu-system-x86_64 \
        -net user,hostfwd=tcp::2222-:22 \
        -net nic,model=virtio \
        . . .
So if I then try connecting to port 2222 on 127.0.0.1 from the host, I get routed to port 22 of the host itself rather than port 22 on the guest. I am quite sure I have the syntax correct, but apparently I am making a mistake somewhere. What?

On the host I have QEMU emulator version 2.8.1(Debian 1:2.8+dfsg-6+deb9u7) on Devuan GNU/Linux ascii.

The guest itself is running and has outbound networking working, as far as I can tell.
