Q: Bandwidth Limiting users on a LAN is it possible

G'day all,

I am considering re-configuring a LAN a friend of mine set up. At the moment there are 8 friends (computers) on this network (Cat5 + WLAN) for the express purpose of internet access, we have one ADSL connection and split the cost.

The question I have is, is there a way to connect the router through a linux server (probably running ubuntu) to control the bandwidth to the individual users possibly connected on a separate switch. So that downloads and streaming video, etc of bandwidth bandits don't slow down everyone else's internet experience.

Would that make it a gateway?

I am only a newcomer to networking but, a tutorial link to two would be nice.

This may be a given but it I intend for the LAN server to act as a firewall for the network and fileserver to assist swapping files and keeping out crap.

Any assistance would be appreciated, if this post doesn't make too much sense it's because i've been online too long researching this and it is now 2am, beddy byes time.

Thanks for that link Brian1.

I looked at that but for some reason thought it was only for limiting uploads last night. Now that I've had some sleep I have found the WiKi for Squid Users Guide I might get somewhere.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Squid proxy should do the trick. Never used it but one of the many things it can do from what I have read.

Thanks for your ideas.

I was also looking at setting up a httpd Apache server to monitor all this. I think that both squid & apache might be a little above the head of a beginniner (being me).

I might see if i can find a hardware solution, or a switch with software to help in this regard. At the moment it is a project in planning and it might just be easier to keep an eye on individual usage and just disconnect them if they start hogging the net connection.

Cheers.

I don't think squid is above the head Though Apache may be. I myself set up squid in less than an hour. Its configuration file is fairly commented and with good default options.
