Will you let us know if you figured it out? That also a pretty nice gesture for other people with this "problem" ... :-)

Speeds

How can you increase the speed at which the data is transferred? I have ports 12000-15000 set, and i am getting like 1.5k/sec...whats that about?

Heres my proftpd.conf:
ServerName "ProFTPD Default Installation"
ServerType standalone
DefaultServer on

# Allow FTP resuming.
# Remember to set to off if you have an incoming ftp for upload.
AllowStoreRestart on

# Port 21 is the standard FTP port.
Port 21
PassivePorts 12000 15000

# Umask 022 is a good standard umask to prevent new dirs and files
# from being group and world writable.
Umask 022

# To prevent DoS attacks, set the maximum number of child processes
# to 30. If you need to allow more than 30 concurrent connections
# at once, simply increase this value. Note that this ONLY works
# in standalone mode, in inetd mode you should use an inetd server
# that allows you to limit maximum number of processes per service
# (such as xinetd).
MaxInstances 30

# Set the user and group under which the server will run.
User nobody
Group nogroup

# To cause every FTP user to be "jailed" (chrooted) into their home
# directory, uncomment this line.
DefaultRoot /home/william/Storage
DefaultChdir /home/william/Storage
# Normally, we want files to be overwriteable.
<Directory /home/william/Storage>
AllowOverwrite on

</Directory>

# Needed for NIS.

PersistentPasswd off

# Default root can be used to put users in a chroot environment.
# As an example if you have a user foo and you want to put foo in /home/foo
# chroot environment you would do this:
#
# DefaultRoot /home/foo foo

Passive mode and port changes

I followed the instructions here.

I am running FreeBSD 6.2, I changed the port configuration as suggested, and routed outside traffic via port 22 to port 9000. I'm testing on an internal node. Ports keep changing, despite setting PassivePorts to 9001 9001.

Can anyone offer advice? My client hangs during authentication. It seems like it's taking a while to upload files, but I get a relatively fast upload speed, but authentication is slow.

I skipped page 2 of this thread last night.

This bit solved everything
UseReverseDNS off
IdentLookups off

17 mbps upload now w00t!

Thank you to the geniuses of this community, without which I would still be using windows, and still wouldn't have a clue about much of anything.
