Exclamation proFTPd Internet problem

I have solved alot today on a previous thread thanx to the help of some good linux user but I have a fresh problem. I use Mandrake 10.1 and I am using proFTPd as my ftp server program on my server box.

The problem I am having is that I cannot access my FTP server from the web.

It works fine on my LAN and this is what I cannot understand. Now, to ensure that it works on the web and not my LAN I have changed the server type from standalone daemon to inetd or whatever its called so that the server can be accessed from the web. However the problem that I am getting is that when I try and connect to my server a box pops up and tells me that my files are read-only, first problem because I know they arnt, and second thing then it comes up with a page that doesnt look like a standard IE page saying that the server is busy and that I should try again. I know for a fact that my server is not busy.

It is a very frustrating problem. I have a netgear modem router that I have prot forwarded ports 20, 21 and 22 all to my server. My Linux box also runs apache and Samba.

Any help much appreciated!!!

Many thanks!!!

post an `ls -l' on such a file; which user does proFTPd run as?
have you tried telnet'ing to the ftp server? Does that work?

Hey,

How do I telnet it???? You are addressing a severe noob lol.

Secondly I also run apache on the same server, I dont think this will cause any problems as apache is an http server and ftp is obviously FTP.

I have tried accessing it on another internet connection and the operation was timed out, its wierd. I know it works fine on my LAN, and I have port forwarded all of the necessary ports on my firewall/router. I can't understand why it isnt working

$ telnet myserver.here.foo {20,21,22}
(connection info)
HELP
USER foo
PASS bar
PWD
CDUP
PWD
...

I don't know the FTP protocol; google will probably help you...

and yeah, apache shouldn't have anything to do with it. Not on account of using a different protocol (as you suggest), but on account of using a different port.

Hope this helps,

Jonas Kölker

When u install proFTPd do you need to install inetd separately???

I was reading the inetd configuration from the proFTPd manual and I went looking for the inetd.conf file only to find that there was no sign of it in the etc directory, which lead me to think that maybe I am missing components???

Apparently you can install inetd from an RPM???

Thanx !!!
