procmail problem

I am using sendmail as my mta and my boss asked me if I could set up an out of office reply for him. I said sure, no problem. Well I cannot get procmail to work. I have a .procmailrc file in his home directory and a .forward file which pipes the mail into procmail. Is the the correct way to handle this?

The message I am getting is:

smrsh: procmail not available for sendmail programs (stat failed) 554 5.0.0 Service unavailable
From reading the procmail man it does not look like it needs to be running as a daemon. Is there something else I need to do in sendmail?

This is rh7.2, sendmail-8.11.6-27.72

Any thoughts would be really appreciated.
