Problems with the /etc/hosts file, how to fix?

Hello.

I have some problems with my internet-connection on my linuxserver.

My ISP sends out DHCP addresses per 'network card', so I want to set up my linux-server with 2 network cards (so I'll get 2ips).
After I've connected the plugs from each net-card to the dsl modem, I get the 2 ips that I wanted.
But, the odd / strange thing is that something is making the inet 'pinging' out - 100 ~ 300 ms latency to the linux-server without any load. If I just have one of the network-cards from the server connected to the modem, it stands "online" with 1ms ping (normal) , but with both connected the whole net is falling down.

In the startup I got this message one day :

" Could not find / start up the internet adress for host-*-*-*-*.*.*
This will block the system from working properly. It is possible to
fix it by adding host-*-*-*-*.*.* in the file /etc/hosts. "

* What shall I write in the /etc/hosts file?
* Some other things that I might have forgotten?

I'm running mandrake - with gnome.

sorry for my bad English.

*nxd*

I'm not sure I've exactly understood your post, but in the hosts file the only lines that work are IP [space] domain: e.g.
64.179.4.149 www.linuxquestions.org

In your case perhaps the message says 'specify your domain's IP in the hosts file to cut out the need for DNS resolution of your IP to reduce the latency.'

Well, I added the 2ips - hosts , but no change.

The latency is still there - pingtime outs etc.

Is there nothing I can do?

Strange, because it has worked very fine on windows-os'.
