Problems with squid / smoothwall

Hi all,

Nice set of forums with some detailed answers, I am impressed

I have a newly installed smoothwall bow (P233, 64Mb, 2*3com nics) which I am using to connect to a cable modem on a dynamic IP from NTL in the UK.

Web browsing through the web proxy (squid i presume?) is just fine. The problems occur whenever I try to get to a FTP site (either to upload or download) when I get a failure to resolve the URL type errors.

I have played with the smoothwall config both via the web interface and via some config file editing but have been unable to either correct or even alter the situation.

Any help or advice that people can offer would be greatly appreciated. Sorry of another forum was more applicable, if so could a mod please move this thread.

Thaks in advance

HT

Look into your firewall if it is not blocking ftp connections.

I don't have an ftp binary on the smoothwall bax so I'm not sure if the firwall is blocking connections or if it is a squid problem? I can ping ftp site from the smootwall bax but not from a ms-dos window on my network?

How do I find out which end the problem is on?

Sorry about the n00b questions but, well, I'm a n00b.

Thanks for the swift responce.

HT

EDIT: I was being stupid The problem was that I was using a web proxy but didn't have my smoothie box set as DNS for my network

Note to self, must RTFM before moaning to BBs
