Problems with network card

I have an SMC1211TX card (SMC's EZ range) which works fine in Windows 98 SE. Having recently tentatively ventured into the world of Linux (Mandrake 8.1), it has decided not to play ball! The eth0 module appears to load successfully on boot up, and the card's name is even detected at this point (as well as in HardDrake). However, typing any www address in Konqueror reults in a host not found message. Loading HardDrake I find my network card listed, but trying to run the configuration tool results in a modprobe error: "can't find module eth0". Do I need to recompile the drivers/module for this card, or is there an easier way to sort the problem?

Thanks for any help,

Matthew Burgess.

PS: Just some additional info: This card uses the Realtek 8139 drivers, and is set up on my Uni LAN to use DHCP (through Windows anyway - not sure how to configure this in Linux yet). It also runs through a firewall at uni's side.

You say your card is detected at startup and it appears to be loading correctly.. but have you configured the card? You said you haven't figured out DHCP on Linux yet, so what are you using for network info? What are the static settings you are using?

Do you have a Gateway setup properly? What about DNS server entries?

Please post the contents of /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Also post the results of issuing an 'lsmod' command as root.

Well, this is being sent from my Linux Browser! I got the card sorted - once I figured out that linuxconf can be used to configure dhcp - I'm a total newbie!

It now turns out that the problem was in the ifcfg-eth0 file. It was using a static IP address instead of DHCP.

Thanks Kevin for pointing me in the right direction.

Matt
