Problems with Apache and SuSE 8.2

I am having problems with my Apache server.

I am running a 3 workstation network running througha router.
I just finished editing the httpd.conf file and everything looks good, made sure the port was set at 80, set doc dir etc.
I have restarted the server several times and tried to access the server from one of my machines on my network and outside. I keep getting a dns error.
I can successfully ping the linux box from one of my other boxes, so I know its not an IP config problem.

I also made sure that i set up IP forwarding ont he router to point to the linux box for any incoming port 80 requests.

I thought it may be a firewall problem, so i shut it off for a bit and it still doesnt work

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Please, I need help.

thanks.

Can you view the server using it's IP address?

If you haven't set up any dns for it or added entries in the other machines hosts files you won't be able to access it by name only IP, assuming it's working of course.

No i cant view it by IP address, but I can ping the machine and the server is running, I started it manually with no errors.

The madness of apache

Can you view it from the machine it's actually on using the loopback

http://127.0.0.1/index.html

You can test the configuration file too without starting apache using

httpd -t

or

apachectl configtest

wherever httpd or apachectl is installed on your system

it maybe be quite long....but post the httpd.conf file, i'll scroll through it and compare it with mine.

also, if you are running a firewall, make sure you are giving access to port 80 on the machine.

I have figured it out. My box was not allowing incoming port 80 requests. I've managed to get everythign working fine!

once i again i am reminded of how lovely firewalls are

Thanks for the help.
