problems copying over nfs exports v4 to v5

i have a nfs server running RH 4.4.(I know it's old, don't yell, another issue).
three RH4.4 clients start a script (which resides on the server) from cron at identical times and can copy two 100MB files from the server to local disk without issue.
If I run the same script (again residing on the nfs server) from three RH5.5 clients at identical times from the cron, the nfs server crashes after copying one of the two 100 mb files to one of the clients.
No NFS messages in /var/log on either side.
Nothing in dmesg
I cannot run wireshark etc on these systems.

nfs version on rh4.4 servers and clients: 1.0.6.x
nfs version on rh5.5 clients : 1.0.9.x

any ideas ? TIA
