Problems connecting mandrake 7.1 to the Internet through a Windows 2k proxy server

I am a complete linux newbie and am just trying a copy of mandrake 7.1 we've had lying around for ages.

I am installing on to an old machine at work and have connected it to our Windows 2000 network.

We have DSL Internet access shared using a free program called CC Proxy. I have set up the Linux box and installed the networking components and am successfully pinging the intended Proxy.

I have configured Netscape Navigator with the IP Addresses and the Port Numbers but when I try to access the Internet I get the message:

"A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data

Try connecting again"

Any help would be most appreciated

Thanks very much

hi richiebartsmith, welcome to lq. can you ping anything outside the proxy server, i.e. google.com, etc. if so, what does /etc/resolv.conf look like. what kind of firewall issues are we looking at? one other thing, i'd suggest a newer distro, as support has greatly improved. mandrake is up to version 10 now.
