problems activating .htpasswd and .htaccess files

hi guys,

i have my page created and the .htaccess file inserted the .htpasswd file is good the thing is that when i try to access the page on my win98 machine i get the prompt for username and passwd but thing it is does not authenticate! wat is wrong with it? is it with the ports? 80 & 443
cause the files have been created ok they have been chmoded and the directory they are in is accessible by the apache group!!

i'm running on rhel_as

Can you please post your .htaccess? Also how did you created .htpasswd? What is the error you get when you try to authenticate? Looking at the apaches's error_log might be useful to understand what the problem is.
